Libraries and Other Resources
In addition to the excellent resources at the Boyle County Library and its bookmobile, the library at Centre College offers a wealth of books and periodicals consistent with a fine liberal arts institution. The new Community Arts Center is developing a lending library, as people donate from their private collections. A number of resources is available for genealogy research, including an extensive private museum on the history of the Jones surname.
The Perryville Battlefield state park features a museum with artifacts and maps on this pivotal Civil War battle, and a self-guided walking tour has interpretive markers at eight locations. The museum gift shop offers a wide selection of books on the Civil War.
Boyle County Library
Soon to expand, the Boyle County Library has a computerized catalog of more than 111,000 volumes, CDs, DVDs, and VHS tapes, numerous computer work stations, and an inviting wood-paneled reading room with traditional furnishings and a fireplace at each end. Through the inter-library loan service, the library is linked with public and private academic, corporate, and organization libraries from across the state. First Search offers on-line access to an extensive list of periodical and genealogical archives. The children's area has a colorful gazebo that features a built-in aquarium, cubby holes and reading nooks. Story hour for young children, "brown bag" lunch-time presentations, and classic movie nights are a few of the regular activities offered by the library. The bookmobile travels throughout the county on a biweekly basis, making its resources conveniently available to all.
Grace Dougherty Library
This extensive collection of books and periodicals on the campus of Centre College is available for on-site use by local residents without a fee. Adults may purchase a library card for a one-time fee of $10.00. This allows the holder to check out up to three books at any one time. High school and younger students may use material within the library, but may not have borrowing privileges.
