Danville is a regional center for health care and has been since 1809, when Dr. Ephraim McDowell performed the world’s first successful abdominal surgery. His patients included a young James Knox Polk of Tennessee, who later became the country’s 11th president.
Medical and Alternative Care
Close to 100 independent physicians in 26 specialties are affiliated with Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, a modern 187-bed integrated health care delivery system that offers a full array of ancillary services and state-of-the-art procedures and techniques to he residents of a six-county area. With technology similar to and surpassing that in large metropolitan areas, recent advancements include hyperbaric oxygen therapy, filmless radiography, and a paperless patient care system. The hospital also operates convenient outpatient facilities for diagnostic testing and physician care. Preventive health is emphasized through health education and wellness programs at McDowell Wellness Center, where hospital-bassed physical, occupational, and speech/language therapy services are offered.
Independent diagnostic and treatment centers include MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), radiation therapy, oncology/hematology, and renal dialysis. Space for a free-standing surgery center in downtown Danville is currently being renovated. The new facility will maintain the historic character of the building’s facade.
In addition to allopathic and osteopathic family practice physicians and specialists, numerous independent health and wellness practitioners offer their services in the fields of chiropractic, iridology, massage therapy, nutrition counseling, optometry, physical therapy, and others. To identify Chamber members, please refer to our Member Directory.
The Boyle County Health Department offers health education, testing, immunization, and clinic services on a sliding scale. Health enhancement programs, such as weight loss and smoking cessation, are also available.

Services include crisis intervention, evaluation and referral, life skills groups, counseling for behavioral problems, such as substance abuse, and a special program for children who need extra time and attention.
